My Dear Trash Goes Live! Episode 1

Laura and I have had so many emails asking for advice about selling on ebay, we thought we'd try our hand at videography. Seeing that we're both stay at home moms to many little ones, it was quite a chore to get ready for our first broadcast. Here's my daughter, a professional make-up artist, giving Laura a few touch-ups.
We'd like to keep the videos short, but share a few brands, starting prices and eventually show you how we ship. We'd love to hear what you think of episode one. Is it helpful? Boring? You can't wait to see the next one? Please be honest, but kind. Let's try and get 50 comments on this so we really get a feel for what you'd like to see. Hope you enjoy. Love, Kelly & Laura

  1. LOVED the music and opening sequence and music and closing sequence. SO cute, so clever! The video was good too. My only comment would be, we couldn't see either of you very well at all. The lighting was dark. That's my only complaint.

  2. I agree about the lighting! Also I'd love to hear your reasoning behind picking out the men's items you did. Is Ralph Lauren a great seller? Do the really big sizes sell better? I'd love to know this kind of stuff! Thanks for your blog, I LOVE it! You both inspired me! My goal to make $300 for our anniversary trip has been totally achieved! I've made $430 and still have 10 days!

  3. Agree with the lighting. Also, I heard a background noise, sounds like a fan or air conditioner that I found made it difficult to hear at times. Other than that, I love the idea. I love tips.

  4. I liked it to the point and practical !!!

  5. I really appreciate the effort that went into it, but, honestly, I prefer the photos rather than the videos as I think it will be easier to go back and look things up. Sometimes, I need to go back to see what you have said about a certain brand, etc., and it's quicker and easier to find the info I need when it's the picture by picture version.

I do really enjoy your blog and appreciate your doing it. Maybe you could have a section off on a sidebar or something where you just have brands listed with your experience regarding them.

  6. This made me smile! i love the music and the information. Where do you find everything for $1? (I live in AZ too.)

  7. Video was super cute! You probably plan on getting to this in a later video, but I would like to hear about how you price items--what the strategy is. That's the part of ebay selling I have the most trouble with!

  8. So...my only comment would be that because you both are busy moms, I think the video seems like alot of work. Not only are you going to have to find the time to get together, keep the kids quiet, shower, put make-up on, etc...for the info that you want to share, I think the pictures can do the same thing and then you can do it at 3am if that's when you get time or in your pj's if that is what needs to happen. Just my opinion. THanks ladies for keeping the trash flowing.

  9. A couple of thoughts:
One, as fun as the music is, have you looked into whether or not you can use it for free? The last thing you would want would be to have fees to pay for using popular music on a fun video about how to make money...
Two, the video itself was dark and far enough away from you that when you talked about details on the jeans, etc...it was hard to tell what exactly you were referring to.
That being said, I love your blog and the information you share! It's truly inspiring!

  10. First off, I really appreciate y'all sharing the information that you do. I've done some selling in the past - just stuff from around the house - and I'm interested in buying & reselling. I looked you up today to see what good info you had, and I wasn't disappointed! =) That said, I agree with the previous posted who said that it seems like a lot of work when you can accomplish the same thing with pictures. However, if you enjoyed setting this up & producing it, that's great - keep the videos coming! Thanks again for the tips!

  11. Thanks for your time in encouraging your readers. It is so nice of you to share your expertise. It is my humble opinion that the items you showcased would be easier seen in a still photo. That being said, the video was very nice-a more personal approach. Have you considered using video to just speak with us about what sells best such as size, label, color, best places to shop, what's best sold as lots, shipping, even basics about how to get started selling, etc.? Just recently came across your blog. You girls rock! Thanks!

  12. I love the idea of doing a general description video clip about what My Dear Trash is all about. Then, after that leaving our best sales and finds in still photos. Thanks for leaving your thoughts. They are really helping with where we want to go with this.

  13. The intro was waaaaaay too long. We're staring at a title screen for quite a while. Would be nice to cut it down to 5-10 seconds. Same with the outro... we're just staring at a title screen. The content is there, just get less fussy with the rest of it. You might consider putting the subtitle of the video at the bottom of the screen and introducing the video yourself over the music, rather than multiple title screens.

  14. Friends:

Agree with all posted here, appreciate the effort. I liked hearing your voices after seeing so many photos of you.

Barebones video with more light would be fun, but please don't go to any extra effort that you already are? We like everything you put into your blog already.

    Take care,
    Edie

  16. You are both rock stars! I love it but of course, I gave birth to one of you.
You are paving new roads for trash! Somehow, that just did not come out right--anyhow..I am your biggest fan!

  17. I thought your music was great. I liked how short the video was and to the point. You were far away and I couldn't hear you too well. But a fun start. Thanks for the tips. Here's a question... do you sell a lot more XL sizes than you do the S,M, or L? It's just something I've noticed when you show things you have bought and sold, and I just wondered if that had better selling power.

  18. Love this whole idea, you have inspired me to sell on Craigslist and this past weekend I sold a quilt top for $30 paid $8.00, 2 chairs for $45 paid $8 and an exercise video system for $25. I would love to see some video tips on Craigslist selling as well as some make-over tips (painting techniques, color choices, etc..) Love the music & the first video. Thanks so much for your unselfishness in sharing this with everyone.

  19. I loved the video just as much as I love your blog. I think you two are awesome for taking all the time you do to share tips. I have learned a lot from reading this blog and now look forward to more videos! Thank you!

  20. You guys are so stinking cute! I loved the music. I have never personally seen things for a dollar at GW. I will have to keep going back. Can't wait to see the next one.

  21. Love it! Love it! Love it! I have been wanting to do this for a while, but I'm military overseas, so I'll have to wait until I get back home. I read your blog religiously. I think the video is a great idea! I would really love to see a video of some of the furniture and decor transformations that you do. This is something I've always wanted to get into also, but I don't know where to start or how to do the work. Sure I could always watch those home improvements shows, but I'd love to see how you do it and hear your thoughts behind the pieces you choose and why.
I have turned so many people on to this blog! I just love what you both do. You're an inspiration. Got your card from an ebay sale, btw. :)

  22. Love the video idea! I think it’s a nice complement to what you’re doing already. Plus I foresee a My Dear Trash phenomenon happening. The My Dear Trash book is next right? I made my own notes, but I think all your readers would love a cheat sheet they could print out and carry with them that has all the best clothes brands and sizes that you discovered sells best. By the way I had to share with you gals that I found a pair of Eileen Fisher pants with the original tags on them at Goodwill for $1.29. Can’t wait to see what they sell for.

  23. Questions I have that I wish you would address;
    What brands sell well?
    What sizes?
How do you determine the starting sale price?
I there a strategy as to what day the ebay auction ends on and a time of day?
How many items do you list at a time?
How do you handle shipping? Do you print shipping labels? Loved the video, but hard to see you and the items. Would have appreciated more reasoning as to why you chose the specific items that you did vs. just the brand and size and what they sold for. Thank you so much! YOU ARE INSPIRING! We don't have a $1 day at our goodwill so I am trying to figure out how to do what you do ---my monthly profits are your WEEKLY profits....I need help!!! THANK YOU!!!!!

  24. Liked the video - you gals have talent! I would suggest tying the theme back in at the end - the video kind of just _ends_ without coming full circle back to the stated purpose. You inspire me!
