Savannah, Georgia

Mr. Right has a conference in Savannah, Georgia at the beginning of June and I'm tagging along for the ride.  We've extended for a few days so we can have some alone time and explore the city, so I thought I'd put out a little request for suggestions here on the blog.  We'll be staying at the Marriott Riverfront so any activities in that area would be great.   We'd love any suggestions for restaurants, shops, attractions, etc.  Thanks for your help.  Love, Kelly.

  1. No ideas, but we loved the weekend we spent in Savannah years ago. We took a carriage tour of the sights.

  2. Hi! I've been following for a while but have never commented. I just got back from Savannah today, and honestly I spent most of my time around Tybee Island. It's a 20-30 minute drive from Savannah. I really enjoyed Captain Mike's Dolphin Adventure. A boat takes you out to the ocean to see dolphins, and there were a lot to see! The ride is 60-90 minutes long and I think it's only offered at certain times of day (it was 2pm on Tuesday), so you can't just drop in at your leisure.

We ate at Uncle Bubba's Oyster House (Paula Deen's restaurant named after her brother) and it was okay...not amazing. However, we had a great low country boil that was only $7.50 per person from a place called Bobo's Seafood Market, but it's located in kind of a sketchy area and it's very messy since you have to peel/devein your own shrimp. Not to mention, it comes with a plastic fork and that doesn't help break crab legs!

  3. I live in Savannah and can probably make more recommendations than you can handle :)

Specifically for My Dear Trash -- there are some shops on Whitaker Street that have gorgeous furniture, home "stuff", and Architectural Salvage. Maybe not so much for buying but great for inspiration! I may have to check back in to give you the specific names, but if you happen to take the walk from River Street to beautiful Forsyth Park and go down Whitaker Street, you can't miss them, they are all located across from each other.

If you walk to Forsyth I would recommend taking the Bull Street route as well. This will take you past the Mercer House (of Midnight in the Garden fame), through several of our beautiful squares, past a few antiques shops, and past the SCAD art shop.

I would highly recommend one of the night-time walking tours; there are many to choose from. Downtown is so beautiful at night that it shouldn't be missed -- and it's much less hot at night! -- but I'd definitely recommend going with a group for safety's sake. I can personally vouch for the kitschy fun of the Haunted Pub Crawl, which will give you a chance to tour some of the locals' watering holes along with the more tourist-oriented spots, and hear some entertaining stories along the way.

If you're here the first weekend in June they should be having First Weekend on the River -- fireworks, music, food and arts and crafts vendors.

Food: Lady & Sons is ok but Uncle Bubba's is a rip! Tons of way-better seafood to be had. The Crab Shack or Cafe Loco on Tybee are excellent choices for seafood, especially Cafe Loco if you want the freshest, most delicious local shrimp. Also on Tybee, North Beach Grille & Tybee Island Social Club both have good food, excellent drinks, and live music outdoors on the weekends. It really is worth the drive to spend a day on Tybee!!! But, the options on River Street are good, too. Highly recommend Olympia Cafe!!! Also, the Exchange Tavern, and maybe Fiddlers. Oh, and Skylar's on Bay Street!

Zunzi's takeout on York Street is NOT TO BE MISSED! Catch them for lunch since they close at 5 or 6. Everything I've had there is delicious but my favorites are the Godfather sandwich or the Oliver's lunch.

Believe it or not, this is my abbreviated list :) Feel free to ask if you have more specific questions.

  4. Okay, I have no Savannah advice. But I've always wanted to go. (Isn't the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil set there? Love it!).

Have a WONDERFUL time with your husband. It's inspirational how you balance family and work!

    Peace,
    Edie

  5. I live int he Savannah area. You need to go to RiverStreet, eat at either Mrs. Wilkes or Paula Deene's restaurant. Go to either Tybe Island beach or Hilton Head beach (Tybe is not as clean as Hilton Head) and Hilton Head is only about 35 minutes from you. Hope you have a great visit.
