New York, New York! And A Big Challenge

I've returned from New York and all I can say is no trip would be complete without a visit to the local goodwill! Lucky for me there was a Goodwill outlet in Long Island City, which is just a short taxi ride from Times Square, where we were staying. Here's what it looks like... A huge room of bins- full of clothes. The really exceptional part of the New York outlet is that they sell the clothes by the pound...
I knew I couldn't fit too many items in my suitcase so I paid $1.69 per pound. They have hanging scales throughout the store so you can keep track of how much you're spending- they think of everything! I even talked my friend into making a few purchases for her family- who wouldn't want a designer skirt or shirt as a souvenir! Here we are with our purchases...
Yes, it was pouring rain, but what better way to spend a rainy day then shopping trash. I ended up with 15 items for just $13! My only regret? I left behind a Mercedes Benz leather jacket- it was a bit bulky and heavy for carrying around the city and packing in a suitcase AND summer items seem to be doing better on ebay right now. When I had a chance to look it up later, on ebay- there was one listed for $299.00- No bids, but WOW, I think I should have taken the chance. So, tomorrow I will announcing another BIG challenge. If you missed the first BIG challenge last year- which was to earn 4,000 to take my family to Florida you can see the first post here. Can't wait to tell you about the new Big Challenge- it will be part of trash to cash Wednesday. See you then. Love, Kelly.

  2. I heard that Goodwill has a clearance outlet in Phoenix too! It's at 515 N. 51st Ave, in case you're ever interested in checking it out. I've never been there, but the idea sure is interesting!

  3. I'm glad I'm not the only one who HAS to find a Goodwill everywhere I travel, lol! Nashville TN also has one of these by the pound outlets, I've only been once, but it was pretty cool. Thanks for the post!

  4. I loove your challenges! They remind me to think big! I recently have been thinking about a few for myself. One is to earn enough to pay for a gym membership up front (I've been wanting to join a gym but not have a pymt, unfortunately the gym I want to join has a payment only policy). The newest idea is to get my whole family bikes for Christmas. My husbands bike itself will be the most expensive. He would be so thrilled if I can pull this off. My problem is my earnings usually go into more clothes or bills or just meals out. I need to get serious! Maybe I will post my challenge on my blog so make myself more accountable!

  6. I love Goodwill outlet. I have one like 3 miles from my house. I get a ton of stuff from there to resell. The prices there are crazy though. They recently just changed our pricing scale and its a flat .69 for everything but glass, which is .49. On the first Saturday of the month its .49 for everything and glass is .29. Very addicting!!

  7. I'm curious what condition the clothes are in. I have a similar outlet near me and everything is much grimier then at the regular stores. Will you have to wash and iron before selling ? Dry clean only clothes are not worth it. I did find a really cute Janie & Jack dress. It washed beautifully and sold right away for $12. Also this outlet has the best furniture collection and they mark things down as low as $1.

  8. Whitney,
Broadway was amazing! We saw Jersey Boys and Billy Elliot- I'd highly recommend Jersey Boys- Billy Elliot was just so-so but I do love the theatre. Thanks for asking

    Christie,
out of the 13 items I purchased at the Goodwill outlet 2 were new with tags and only 1 item had to be washed. I agree that Drying cleaning clothes is not worth it! You've got to go see for yourself- Let us know what you find at yours.

  9. We have a Goodwill Outlet in Greenville SC. I've only been to it twice though. It's located on Haywood Rd just off Laurens Rd.
The items at the G'ville outlet don't compare to what you bought. The people wear gloves as they dig through the bins. It's....rough. Your items sound great!
