French Dresser Update

Yesterday I fell in love. I know, I'm a married women. But I couldn't help myself. Luckily, it was only with my latest furniture redo, and truth be told, Mr. Right may have fallen in love with it too. I've been wanting one of those French style dressers for a while now. I was hoping to come across one at a yard sale for a few bucks, but after months of searching I decided to take matters into my own hands- I went to craig. First time looking and I found this... Exactly what I had in mind, but with the matching nightstand (I'll be doing that later this week) the seller wanted $150. If you know me, this is way out of my furniture buying budget. I emailed an offer of $100 and she countered with $110. Now this little dresser and nightstand were located in North Phoenix- about 40 minutes away from where I live. I usually don't drive any distance at all to purchase furniture- but something was different about this piece. While Mr. Right and I are headed to Phoenix I realize $110 for a dresser and nightstand is way too much for me. "Why am I driving all the way to phoenix to be overcharged for a piece of furniture?" I ask. "Because you want it," Mr. Right replies. "If I change my mind and we've drove all this way for nothing, you won't care, right?" I inquire. "Nope" As we enter the apartment complex we're greeted by a young couple and we look over the two pieces. They're sturdy, drawers slide good, a few scratches and dents- but that never matters to me. I quickly shell out my $110 and before I know it, it's loaded in the truck and we're headed back to our neck of the woods. Buyer's remorse starts to set in... heavily... then Mr. Right says, "I think you may have just helped make their rent payment." and I think, "he's probably right" I instantly feel better about my purchase and commit to getting it redone right away. Fast forward to Monday. I pull out my french dresser and begin to sand. I love the lines of this dresser and before I know it, I'm ready to paint. After the paint dries I begin my distressing. Each fine white line that appears under the black catches my eye. The piece really starts to speak to me. When the distressing is done I'm in love with it! I don't usually get attached to pieces I'm working on, mostly because I know I'm putting them on craigslist- but this one was different. Next, was a quick trip to Hobby Lobby with Mr. Right so he can pick out the perfect knobs (he's really good at that) With the knobs in place I'm head over heels! Take a look and tell me what you think...

Here's a good look at the knobs Mr. Right chose.
A view from the top...
I definitely need to sell this piece. I need to recoop the $110 for Florida and make a few bucks too. With a $40 investment in knobs (2 are for the nightstand) I'm in $150. What do think I could sell it for? Please leave your vote in the comment section. One of the benefits of pricing it a little high is I get to keep it a little longer- but were leaving for Florida in 2 weeks and I for sure need it to sell before then. I'd love to hear from all of you- resale experience or not. Don't feel any pressure just because I love it- Give me your honest opinion. Let's see if we can get 50 comments by Tomorrow. Come on, it'll only take a minute. Pretty Please...With sugar on top...Thanks. Love, Kelly

It's gorgeous! I vote that you wait until you have the nightstand ready and list them both for $200!

    Peace!

  2. I'd list it for $200 or $225 all by itself. It's stinkin' cute. Do you have a fb page? Put it on there. Put it on Craigslist....you'll sell it!

  7. I don't want to see you sell them either! But if you have to.........I would wait till the nightstand was done and list them both for $350 and maybe come down to $300. It is solid wood furniture! Good Luck!

  27. That looks so great! I love the distressing and the knobs. Wonderful picks! Good luck with the sales!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ok, you're not gonna like my answer. I don't want you to sell it. It's WAYYYYYY to pretty and wonderful. Can't you ever just keep something for yourself?

Ok, fine, if you MUST sell it, I'd definitely go in the 250 range.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Here's my 2 cents... Don't part with it until you find a buyer who loves it MORE than you do--and is willing to say so with their wallet!

The 'make-me-sell' price should be exactly that--the price where you can't afford NOT to sell it. (At least $300 for the set, IMHO...)

But I really think you should keep it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. My vote is list it for $325 for the set or separately for $275 & $85 respectively...I am positive you can get it! It is gorgeous!
    Peace & Love,
    ~Barb~

  42. Holy Cow. I have that same furniture in my girl's room. I have the dresser, nightstand, desk, and hutch. I am so totally going to do them over just like yours. They are so adorable!!! I think you could sell the dresser easily for $300.

    ReplyDelete
  43. holy crap. i literally GASPED when your post loaded. the dresser is STUNNING. the knobs alone are gorgeous, but paired with your transformation.... wow. i agree, you could sell this beauty for a pretty penny.

    ReplyDelete
  44. oh it is so cute. and the knobs are adorable.

    ReplyDelete
  45. If it were me, I would sell the night stand as a night stand or end table and keep the dresser for myself and call it good. : ) But if you must sell them, definitely $250 for the set, but price it a little higher so you have some wiggle room if you like to do that sort of thing.

    ReplyDelete

  57. Hello - I am a first time visitor of your blog. I really love how your dresser turned out in black. It looks gorgeous. I would say, ask for $225, see what the buyer offers, then go down to $190. That's only a $40 profit but, in this economy, people don't like to spend a lot. Good luck!
    Best regards,
    Gloria
