Architectural Monogram

Thursdays are the best! It's dollar day at Goodwill and at approximately 8:45 I load up my 1 year old and head out to find clothes and trash. Sometimes when I come home there's a special little surprise waiting for me. When Laura finds items for $1.00 that she thinks I'll have fun with she drops them off in my driveway. Two weeks ago this is what I found.a 1993 (the date was on a sticker on the back) dresser mirror. Sometimes I'm amazed at what Laura finds for $1.00 at Goodwill and sometimes I completly understand why it was $1- This was one of those pieces. A mirror with no dresser, with a deeply stamped seashell that someone had highlighted with purple and pink marker. What to do, what to do? First, I removed the back and took the mirrors out. Then I wanted to see if the seashell could be filled in...
A thick coat of painters caulk.
Next I removed the wood dividers that separated the mirrors. At this point I thought it would make a fabulous twin size headboard. All I'd have to do is use batting and fabric on the back board and screw the wood frame to the bed frame. Only problem... I only have 1 twin bed and it already has a headboard. Upon further inspection I decided to take the whole thing apart and use just the architectural piece.
Here it is all detached. But that darn seashell is still showing. 4 coats of wood putty later here she is...
I painted just the middle the same tan that's on many of my walls- so I could do a vinyl treatment. I applied a B for our last name and sprayed on a few coats of Semi-Gloss Black, peeled off the vinyl and ...
here she is hanging above the double doors to our family room.

This is the first thing you see when you enter our home. I love how it turned out- and for only $1! What a deal. Wish me luck at today's dollar day- I'll be leaving in approximately 1 hour 15 minutes- not that I'm counting. Love, Kelly

  8. I am so impressed with your creativity! First, I loved how you filled in that seashell with wood filler. I never would have thought to do that! I didn't read the title of your post, so I didn't realize it was a monogram piece. It was a surprise to me what you did with it. Great job! I'm inspired! :)
