Costume Closet!

I'm so excited to share this project with you! Many months back, Laura dropped off this little treasure at my front door...She picked it up for $1.00 at Goodwill - Can you believe no one wanted this little beauty. True, it has a few personalized carvings, and the inside was a little scary...But the potential was limitless. Laura asked what I thought I'd do with it. Huh? Maybe a coffee table, if I turn it on it's back. Laura then said- I see it as a cute little dress up box. Brilliant Laura! And you say you're not crafty. Now, I'm usually right on top of my projects, but I was saving this one for my little girls 7th birthday. So, for a few months it was my tool box. I set all my paint supplies on top, it was very handy. But then the transformation began. I started by sanding- lots of sanding! And lots of patching (some of those carvings were really deep) Then I primed the whole thing and it looked like this...

I went into my decorator storage and found this ornate 8x10 frame
I painted the cabinet white inside, hot pink on the outside and Mr. Right added some wheels so it could be portable...

With a few little details, here's the finished product...Isn't it cute?
I epoxied the frame right onto the front. The font for the sign is Rebekah's Birthday and can be downloaded for free here . My 7 year old was super happy with her new costume closet and what was inside...
But I think my 18 month old was truly in heaven...
(do you see the zebra print in the bottom? That's just scrapbook paper that I modpoded on) Here she is all dressed up...
I think this piece will encourage lots of imaginative play and as a past drama teacher I think everyone needs a little make-believe in their lives. Let me know what you think. Love, Kelly.

  1. Great Job. I need to do something similar for all the rescue hero costumes my 2 younger boys have acquired.

  2. Well done! You've inspired me to not turn my nose up at some of the things I see at the thrift store... and given me inspiration to work on some of the stuff I did cart home!
    Thanks!

  3. Kelly:

Of course it's gorgeous. You made it! I can't get over how creative you are.

You and others in the blog world have also inspired me. I'm spray painting furniture for my little boys room--did an activity table and chairs that I purchased off of CL for $20. This week I'm spray painting a big dresser that I bought at an estate sale for my little boys room.

    Question for you:

Did you do this with paint and a sponge brush? I'm asking because I'm spraypainting this dresser and now I'm wondering whether I should have used regular paint and a brush.

How do you decide when to use spraypaint and when to do it the other way?

Thanks! So glad your family appreciates your creativity!

  7. Do you put a poly coat on top of your paint? When you patch do you just use wood filler? I am trying to figure out all of the CORRECT ways to do stuff before I go and ruin the few pieces I have picked up to fix into treasures! Thanks, Anna--please answer me questions to annaklee@hotmail.com THanks!!

I used paint and a foam roller for this project. I use spray paint when there are details like spindles or carving that are difficult to paint smoothly. This was all straight, flat sides. Spray paint is way more expensive then regular paint, so If I think I can get a nice look with a foam roller, I do it. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for visiting My Dear Trash and all of your supportive comments.

  15. Thanks, Kelly, for the personal response!

Yes, this is what I've discovered with my huge dresser that is now going on the 5th coat of navy spraypaint. Next time I'll go with a foam roller and paint. Live and learn!

    Take care,
    Edie
