$5 Table Make-over

Here's the table I picked up this weekend for $5.
How do I decide if I'm going to buy a piece of furniture at a yard sale? Three easy rules:
1. Must be solid wood
2. Must have good lines (character, shape, etc.)
3. Must be a great deal
This table met all my requirements. So, yesterday me, the table and a can of Rustoleum's Heirloom white had a date. And here's the results...
Are you loving the metal lamp I picked up for $10 while garaging this weekend? It came from a model home that the owners purchased fully decorated. They said they've been having yard sales to get rid of all the decor they don't like. One man's trash... Here's a closer look and my new table.
Is it a keeper? You ask. No. This will be posted on craigslist later today. It's a little smaller than some other tables I've redone and it's pine, not oak- So I'm thinking $45. Let me know what you think. Love, Kelly

  1. Do you put a protective coating on your tables after spray painting and then sanding them or do you just leave them as is? I think $45 is a fair price, but that's just my personal opinion.

BTW...new reader here and I love your blog! Inspired by you, I recently picked up an antique record player/radio and gutted it last night, with the intention of making it into a storage cabinet to resell on craigslist. Any profit is welcome since I got it for free AND I have all of the materials to redo it already in my garage!

  3. Beautiful! I'd pay $45 dollars for it.

I think you're right on with your rules. I've painted things that aren't solid wood before, and they end up looking like a not so solid painted piece.

  5. I LOVE your table! How do you do the distressed finish?

  6. Hello
So you don't prime the table first or anything? You just go at it with the spray paint? Then Sand paper here and there?

  10. Let me answer a few of the questions:
    G:
I usually don't apply a protective finish. If you're refinishing an item that will get lots of abuse (like a dining table) I would apply a coat of poly. Also, congrats on the radio redo- I'd love to see it.

    Jaime:
On this particular piece, I just sanded the top of the table and went right to the spray paint. When there's legs with details or carving on furniture I just spray paint those- too difficult to try and sand and regular paint doesn't adhere as well.

    Coffeyhouse:
To distress I use a sanding block with fine sanding paper. Just give it a light touch here and there.

    Thanks for all the comments!

  13. Kelly, can I ask another question too? When you use primer what do you use? I made the mistake of trying to start stripping the varnish off of a childs rocker I found and on my gosh was that the biggest mistake ever.

I first started with KILLZ water based primer (didn't go so well... would need to many coats to count to cover the varnish), then I tried an oil based version. Still doesn't cover well. I finally found an online tutorial and they use BIN shellac primer in a spray can. I haven't tried it, but was wondering what you use. I'm very intrigued that you didn't use a primer on this piece, especially since it has varnish on it. It was such a big mistake to attempt the paint stripper. Talk about labor intensive. I just wanted it painted white for goodness sake!

  15. Tamara,
I generally use Kilz water based for items I can sand and Kilz oil base for intricate areas that can't be sanded. Spray paint happens to stick to vanish really well (hence the reason I didn't prime this table) It's when the original finish is chipped or peeling that you really need to prime. On your rocker, I would just give it a light sanding, use a can of cheap spray paint (the .97 cent stuff) then paint over that with Rustoleum. The cheap spray paint is an excellent primer. Good Luck.
